Threaded Harmony Red Cloth
| ~~Gika Rector - |
Our lives are surrounded by cloth – everywhere we turn, everything we do we touch cloth. Cloth and the weaving of cloth are elegant metaphors for so many things in our lives. The threads that tie us all together, the emerging tapestries of our lives, the infinite variety of combinations of threads – all those images strike a deep chord in me. In addition to the metaphors, there’s something deeply satisfying about weaving cloth. It’s magical, soothing, and productive. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in weaving. So, it seemed appropriate when I heard about The Thread Project to chime right in and volunteer to weave a panel.
The threads of my life are going in a lot of directions right now, so it also made sense to enlist some helpers. I asked fellow weavers Sharla Thomason and Antje Goldflam to join me in weaving this symbol of unity and hope. Somehow it seems especially appropriate for this to be a collaborative project.
I’ve been weaving for over 15 years now and I can’t imagine ever being able to explore all the possibilities. And the weaving has led me to other fiber adventures. Since I learned to weave, I also learned to spin and to make felt. Now, it’s a pleasure to combine lots of different fiber techniques and ideas into sometime practical and sometimes esoteric projects. I recently completed studio residency at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. That was a great opportunity to work with fellow craft artists and to give the public a glimpse of the work behind the work. Currently I’m president of the Houston Area Fiber Artists, an amazingly talented and diverse group of folks with whom I’m honored to be associated. |
