Weaving Reconciliation Green Cloth

~~Joy Wandrey  -
I have been interested in weaving and the textile arts for most of my life, and learned to weave in my early 20's. I have accumulated several looms, and depending on the busy-ness of my life, like to keep at least one project going. This past year, working on my masters degree in Library Science, my looms have languished. Between a full time job, my degree and keeping up with my first-grade son, I have my hands full; however the library where I work has proven to be a good place to share my love of fiber arts with others. I oversee a knitting group that meets weekly at the library, teach spinning, and demonstrate spinning and weaving for various groups. I feel fortunate that these activities are considered part of my job!

I heard of The Thread Project: One World, One Cloth only about an hour before volunteering to weave one of the panels. I was overwhelmed by it's scope and purpose for creating peace, and I was surprised to be chosen, imagining myself among a plethora of folks volunteering. We at the library like the project so much we plan to do a similar project of our own, after the panel is completed for The Thread Project.

In my own weaving, I generally work on a project to demonstrate my feelings for another person. While engaged to my husband I wove a shawl to wear at our wedding; each side of the shawl is a different main color, one representing me, one representing him. This was a double weave project, so that the two distinct sides work together to form one whole. This fabric is becoming more and more representative of our lives together as time goes on.

I graduated from Herron School of Art (IUPUI) in 1999 with a bachelor in Fine arts, Woodworking and furniture design (only because they had no textiles program at all!), secondary concentrations in art history, ceramics, jewelry, and papermaking. I attended two consecutive sessions at Penland School of Crafts, one with Australian weaver Liz Williamson, and the other with a well-known Native American Bead worker. I will take my Masters Level one in knitting this summer, and am considering work on a masters in fine arts/textiles at Indiana University after I finish my MLS. I have been employed as a librarian since October of 2002, with 2 years previous experience in libraries.
