Weaving Reconciliation Green Cloth
| ~~Kate Robertson - |
I have been interested in fibers and cloth all my life. Sewing my own clothes as a child led to weaving and spinning my own yarns as an adult. In the last 15 years my work has evolved from spinning natural colors to dyeing for both spinning and weaving and to the raising of my fiber animals. My company Spirit Wovens focus is on weaving with intention. I use music and words to give the cloth a positive energy and feel. Spinning and weaving has given me the opportunity to connect with women all over the globe, from local and regional groups to international ones on the Internet. It is through this community that we often foster change on our individual worlds.
When I heard about this project, I thought it was tailor made for me. The idea of ‘Weaving with Intention’ on a global scale was truly inspiring. What an opportunity this has been to connect to others around the world.
I like the entire process of completing cloth. I raise my own flock of Shetland sheep, shear them by hand, process the wool, dye it and weave it into blankets, shawls and scarves. In my work I also use cotton, silk, alpaca and have even spun the down from my dog. I find the process meditative and feel a great connection with women throughout the centuries who took fleece or yarn and created something to make their world a better place. With just a few threads in hand we can create something lasting, beautiful and full of hope. I am honored to be part of the Thread Project One World-One Cloth. |
