Lienzo Luminoso (Cloth of Light) Yellow Cloth

Karen, from Old Bar, Australia writes: Weaving has given me a creative and intellectual base in my life. Allowing me to enjoy and discover so much about life and the world we live in.

It makes sense to me that this special project – The Thread Project – will allow me to work in a way that has “threaded” links to other people, cultures and ways of being.

As a weaver for 25 years I have explored and devoured many types of weaving, always being surprised and delighted by how humans have learnt to do a technique or use a “mistake” to advantage. So much has this interested me that I wrote “The Australian Weaving Book” and “Weaving Made Easy” in 1990. In these books I wanted everyone to enjoy weaving with little tools or investment; just as I began.

Now I have many looms including an 8 shaft floor loom, and 24 shaft compu-dobby loom, which will help me weave a panel of Lienzo Luminoso. I was drawn to the project because of a feeling of increasing helplessness about political and human rights actions of governments. There seems little that I can ever do to even have an opinion about such things. To work on this cloth is my small way of using my expertise in a practical way to have an opinion and to be involved in a way that I can – to feel a connection to others. Although the cloth seems a symbolical gesture, symbolism sometimes strengthens action and motivation and will allow us to feel the ‘threaded’ connections.

Words, stories, music & poetry will be woven into my panel with the actual threads. Words and sound create an intellectual connection with others; the sensory work and texture of the weaving will connect our unspoken emotions. This is a holistic project that I’m delighted to a part of.
