Lienzo Luminoso (Cloth of Light) Yellow Cloth

~~Maryann Stamford  -
When speaking of her craft, Maryann, from Maleny, Australia says:

After 26 years I still get butterflies when I see a loom dressed and ready for the weaver to sit and make magic. In weaving, I find an odd combination of order and regime, mixed with unending variations and surprises. The physical technique of weaving satisfies my need for rhythm, structure and logical progression, while the infinite number of combinations of colour, texture, pattern and design keeps me excited and determined to discover the unknown.

My concept for The Thread Project: One World, One Cloth came from my fascinations of the possibilities of the 'six degrees of separation’ that surround our lives. In the same way this project reminds me of how our passions are shared by so many others who we will never meet in person but are somehow linked each to the other. So I have asked family, neighbours, and friends far and wide to find in their bottom drawer some white or cream ribbon of any kind or width, and to take the ribbon to many friends, colleagues, neighbours etc and ask them to sign the ribbon with a permanent black pen. This way I will be weaving hundreds of names into my panel. As this piece will be a part of the Cloth of Light, my concept is to have white/cream and black (all light and the absence of light) as the bulk colour way and to have splashes of the colours of the rainbow graduating through the white, cream and black, so I will be dyeing up some weft cotton. There will be a dyeing day in my studio where I will involve the local community, dyers and fabric craftspeople.

I imagine the flow of all these names funneling into my studio address in rural Maleny. Each name finding their place in a woven panel that will become a part of The Thread Project: One World, One Cloth and then flowing outwards again to combine with panels from every continent of the world.
